Since 2005 Full Professor (Gewoon hoogleraar) at Department of Materials and Chemistry, VUB (Belgium)
Since 2001 Part time Professor Corrosion Technology and Electrochemistry, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, TUDelft (Netherlands)

2017-2021 Head of the Department Materials and Chemistry
Throughout my PhD I worked on controlled pitting corrosion of Al in order to use it as a continuous electrograining surface treatment for lithography and was financially supported by the company Agfa. This allowed me to thoroughly understand the relationship between physical metallurgy, localized corrosion and its protection by taking hydrodynamics, mass and heat transfer, and electrochemistry into consideration. With this background, I started in 1991 within Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), research on corrosion and its protection as an assistant professor. In 2001, I accepted a part-time position at TuDelft as a supervisor for M2i corrosion projects. This position enabled me to integrate the two groups (Brussels and Delft) and to continuously bring a high number of postdocs (5-8) and PhD students (15-20) together to study different fields of corrosion using local electrochemistry, in situ surface analysis and modelling. In 2011, I was granted the long-term Methusalem project (2011-2023, 7,5 M Euro) 'Design and Prediction of Nanostructured Metal Surfaces' (NANOMET). Methusalem is the most prestigious grant awarded by the Flemish government for top researchers. I was awarded with following prices 2019 Fellow Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection (CSCP) (to be awarded October 2019) 2017 H. H. Uhlig Corrosion Award, Corrosion Division Electrochemical Society, 2017, Honorary Professor University Science and Technology, Beijing (China), 2016 Francqui chair UAntwerpen, 2014 Medal of European Federation of Corrosion, EUROCORR, Pisa (Italy), 2012 Alusil award, Saint-Petersburg (Russia): prize for Al Surface Science and Technology
